Sound Design

Intensive Workshop

I have assembled a curriculum for a week-long Sound Design Intensive Workshop,
designed specifically to provide introductory training and structure for students in the
artistic side of theatre sound. I recently led the inaugural workshop at University of
Massachusetts-Amherst to great success; the students were thrilled to have a
chance to think critically about Sound Design, and the faculty was glad to provide a
new opportunity to their students without breaking the budget line. My Intensive is
designed particularly for departments that do not have a Sound Designer on faculty.

The Sound Design Intensive Workshop, as originally designed, requires 15 hours of
classroom time over 5 days, and culminates in the students 'performing' a design of
their own creation. Emphasis is on text analysis, innovative conceptualization, and
collaboration. I also teach an introduction to some software applications, depending
on what resources are available at the school; in the first workshop, I taught
DigiDesign's Pro-Tools audio editing suite and Stage Research's SFX sound delivery
application. I designed the curriculum specifically for a class size of six of varying ages
and experience (first-year undergrads through MFA grad students). Of course, the
curriculum can be adjusted depending on the particular needs (time, resources, class
size, etc.) of the school. Finally, the Sound Design Intensive Workshop can stand on its
own as a classroom opportunity, or for a more thorough experience, I could lead the
workshop while in residence as a guest designer for a production.
